Fallball Draft Night

I’m writing this draft recap nearly a week late.  I make no apologies though, because I’m busy, and you all aren’t that important.  I know that is a hard truth to swallow.

This years draft was held at Gallagher's Eatery and Pub on Tuesday the 24th. The original plans were to ride around town in the Gallagher's bus, but due to mechanical problems, we ended up on the patio. (Also Zac could not sit at the bar.) All 4 team captains were in attendance, as well as some tag along spectators that will remain nameless.  Not for their protection, but solely because I can’t remember you. Amber Hutson was present to take notes, which is helpful because if not for that I wouldn't have enough info to write this article.  I ordered a Cobb Salad and an Oberon; both were delicious.

The first order of business was for the captains to figure out details about players that were new to the league, friends of friends, or veteran players they hadn’t paid attention to.  We collectively did this by having discussions about people we knew, and Facebook stalking people we didn’t.  Out of left field, Lewis questioned Amber about her menstrual cycle and if it would conflict with any game nights.  He obviously takes fallball very seriously.

After we judged potential players to our liking, it was time to draw numbers in a counter clockwise fashion and pick draft order.

  • Zac Adams was first and drew pick number 4.  This is excellent foreshadowing because his team is going to suck.
  • Ryan Davis was next, and obviously cheated to draw number 1.
  • Brian Lewis, furious that Davis cheated, threatened to kill both him and his family while drawing number 3.
  • Mason Everett then having only one folded piece of paper left to draw, threw a tantrum about having no choice.  He would not settle down until I made 3 more scraps of paper with the number 2 on them and placed them in the hat.

Since it was a snake draft, the picks were as follows.

  • Davis: 1, 8, 9, 16, 17, 24
  • Everett: 2, 7, 10, 15, 18, 23
  • Lewis: 3, 6, 11, 14, 19, 22
  • Adams: 4, 5, 12, 13, 20, 21

There were no accepted pick number trades, so round picks went like this.

Now was the time for player trades to happen.

  • There were many unsuccessful attempted trades for Kyle Hess, probably because he was at the table and people wanted him to feel loved.
  • Adams offered to trade Liberty for Mason.  Mason questioned the legality of leaving his team to the Rookie Chip Ellini and making the move.  Ultimately the offer was dropped.
  • Later Mason offered to trade Ellini and the payment of Zac’s tab for Hess. While this was declined, it would have been the steal of the century for Mason.  Turns out kids eat free Tuesdays at Gallagher's.
  • Mason then reversed the offer and told Zac any player on his team was for sale at the price of his shrimp basket.  Mason said, “I’d rather have free shrimp than my whole team!”
  • Feeling left out of the action, and wanting to one up team 2 and 4, Davis and Lewis hunkered down to “make a trade happen.”  In the wee hours of the night they finally settled on trading Henderson and Kean.
  • Feeling cocky and full of liquid courage, I told Amber if her team wins I will do my best to make her pregnant.  I hear the whole team is on board with this offer and they had a mandatory team practice last Thursday.

Just before the meeting came to a close team names were announced.
