NLDS Recap. DBL vs. KEN

After winning some games late in the season, the Diablos secured their opportunity to try and defend their 2010 NL Crown.  In the first round, they would take on the NL South Division winner Kentucky Waterfalls and Brian Rensch with his 0.00 ERA.

Game 1:
Diablos 6, Kentucky Waterfalls 8 F/6 Box
W: Ryan Davis
L: Tim Leaym
HR: Matt Smorch 4, Adam Nash 2, Jim Noel, Jamey Detamore

The Waterfalls went with their ace Rensch, while the Diablo's countered with Tim Leaym. The Waterfalls started off strong with 7 runs in the first 2 innings. Matt Smorch was a one man wrecking machine! He hit 4 homeruns and drove in all 8 Waterfalls runs. Rensch pitched 2 strong innings and with a 7-0 lead was pulled in the 3rd to be saved for later in the series. Ryan Davis took over and so did the Diablo's.  A late comeback fell short despite 4 Diablo homeruns that chased the game to the score of 6-8.

Smorch drives in all 8 Waterfall runs on 4 Homeruns.

Game 2:
Kentucky Waterfalls 2, Diablos 6 F/6 Box
W: Adam Nash
L: Brian Rockwell
HR: Jamey Detamore, Adam Ross

Adam Nash has had shoulder issues all year but stepped up to hurl game 2.  The Waterfalls would run Rockwell out to the mound, whose 3.32 regular season ERA was the teams 3rd best. Without his normal stuff, Nash labored the entire game. He would end up striking out 8, but walking the same.  A couple of timely Homeruns by Detamore and Ross backed Nash with 6 runs and the Diablos were able to make it stick.  The final score of 2-6, the Diablos had evened the series at 1 game apiece.

Nash picks up a big win for his Diablos.

Game 3:
Diablos 1, Kentucky Waterfalls 2 F/6 Box
W: Brian Rensch
L: Jamey Detamore

What looked to be a routine line drive to Nash in left went soaring off his hands and over the fence giving Matt Smorch his 5th Homerun of the night and the Waterfalls a 1-0 lead. The game was quiet until the third when Rensch was put back in to close out the game. Rensch struggled a bit, in the 4th and with the bases loaded Noel walked to bring in the tying run 1-1. Both Detamore and Rensch pitched well until the 5th inning when Rockwell lifted one over the leftfield fence to give the Waterfalls a 2-1 edge and eliminate the Diablo's.

Nash reacts after bobbling the go ahead homerun over the fence.

After knocking off the reigning NL Champs, the Waterfalls would now fix their eyes on the Belly Itchers for the NLCS.  The series, a best of 3 format, would start Thursday August 11th.
