AllStar Game Recap! 7/3/2012

National League AllStars

American League AllStars

With the Friars moving over to the National League, the league seemed to make a dramatic shift in power towards the Thursday night bunch. A 14-11 advantage on the interleague scoreboard gave a slight edge to the NL, but not quite the results we expected heading into the season. The AL was holding their own and we were in store for another aweseome 9-inning exhibition game at Township Park.

This year's AllStar Captains were Bryan Jennings for the AL and Mike Downs of the NL, a special throw back to the 2007 Township Series when these two stars last went head to head on the big stage!

For the second straight season, Adam Kuzmin had the honors of starting the Allstar game for the NL, while the AL combated with Zac Adams, who was making his first Allstar appearance as a pitcher!

Kuzmin lived up to his reputation and made short work of the AL allstar lineup for the first three innings, striking out 7 without giving up a single hit. Zac was also spot on, before running into some control issues in the 3rd, walking 4 hitters and giving the NL a 1-0 lead.

Not wanting to risk anymore easy runs, Zac was pulled with two down in the 3rd. Mike Hogan inherited an infield full of runners, but struck out Kevin Marszalek to escape the 3rd without any more damage.

During the top half of the 5th, Matt Schave issued a leadoff walk to Brian Meyers, which was followed one batter later by a 2-run jack to right by Conor Barr. The 2-run homer gave the AL allstars a 2-1 lead with 4 innings to play.

Mike Hogan was masterful on the mound as he worked through his three innings of work. Pounding the corners of the board, he struck out 7 without giving up any hits or walks. Next out of the pen was second year standout, Cory Schug.

Schug came out throwing bullets and quickly proved why his name has been a stronghold on the AL league leaders! Line 'em up and set 'em down, Cory mowed through the NL lineup, striking out 6 straight hitters and finishing with 7 total for the game.

With a 2-1 lead in the top of the 8th, Conor and Marcus would get things going again with back-to-back singles, followed by a laser beam double off the bat of Bryan Jennings.

With 1 down, Meyers would deliver a deep fly ball that would chase home Marcus for the 4th run of the game.

With a 4-1 lead, Brian Meyers would take the hill for the save in the 9th. Brian worked a quick, 1-2-3 inning getting Nash, Kuzmin and Rhoton to all ground out to Bryan Jennings in left.

The AL pitchers combined stat line was: 9 innings pitched, 19 K’s, 1 run, 6 walks, and 0 hits.  The win, now brought the Allstar series to a 4-2 AL advantage and shifted the momentum to the American League for next year’s classic.

Conor Barr would take home the Allstar MVP honors going 3-6 with a 2-run homer, single and double.
