Township Series Recap. FRI vs. HIT

The 2012 KWL wiffle ball season saw a lot of great weather compared to 2011. After an offseason of tweaking some rules to provide a boost to hitting, the offenses around the league were on fire from the word jump! Many records were broken. And at the end, two teams remained to play for the coveted KWL championship trophy, The Scared Hitless and the Friars!

Game 1:
Friars 2 Hitless 0 Box
W: Brink
L: Ayres
HR: Brink

A pitcher’s duel set from the beginning. Emerging star, David Ayres took the mound and was very good, but made one mistake to a long-time slugger; Kevin Marszalek, who slugged a 2-run shot to the opposite field.  Melissa Brink made the 2-0 lead stick as she made Scared Hitless live up to their name-sake! She was zinging balls all over the strike zone and was nearly untouchable, giving the Friars a 1-0 series lead.

Brink tossed a 7k shutout for a Friar Game 1 victory!

Game 2: Box
Hitless 2 Friars 1
W: Kuzmin
L: Ross
HR: Kuzmin

Game two was highlighted by another marquee match-up between a pair of ace hurlers; Kuzmin and Ross. Adam came out a bit wild early, but was able to overcome and pitch his way out of a couple of key jams. Ross was not as lucky, as Mark Thomson slugged a two out run scoring single in the second inning, which proved to be the game winner.

Mark's 2-out single ends of evening the series.

Game 3:
Friars 6 Hitless 4 Box
W: Wolf
L: Everett
HR: Kuzmin, Thomson, Brink (2)

After leaving Game 3 tied 0-0 after 4 because of darkness, the offenses came alive 2 days later. Mel put the Friars on the board with her first home run of the series, but it was short lived as Mark hit a 3 run bomb in the bottom half. Mel came through again with her second homer of the game, to even the score at 4-4.  Mason began to have control issues and the Friars build a 3 run lead. Leading off the home half of the 6th, Kuzmin belted a deep blast to center to bring Hitless within 2.  But before they could rally for anything more, Paul Wolf and his lollipop curve and nasty change-up retired the side to pull the Friars just 1 win away from their Second Championship!

Friars celebrate taking Gm3 and giving them a 2-1 lead.

Game 4:
Hitless 4 Friars 1 Box
W: Ayres
L: Brink
HR: Marszalek, Kuzmin (3)

Two days after Mel bested Ayres, Ayres got his revenge and pitched lights out to lead the way for Hitless. Adam Kuzmin was a man possessed at the dish, as he single handily carried the entire offense, homering 3 times off of fireballer Brink. Marsz would later belt his second home run of the series, but it was not enough as Hitless evens the series at 2 games apiece, forcing an exciting game 5 that would decide the fate of both teams!

Ayres was in control, fanning 12 to even the series.

Game 5:
Friars 1 Hitless 9 Box
W: Kuzmin
L: Ross
HR: Kuzmin, Everett

Picking up where he left off in Game 4, Adam jacked his 6th homerun of the series, a 2-run shot, to get Game 5 started with a bang! On the hill, Kuzmin struggled with some control issues and a key hit by Scudder, chased home Ross making it a 2-1 game. Neither team scored until the bottom of the 5th, but that’s when the wheels came off as the compacted schedule took its toll on Andy Ross’s arm. Three walks with the bases loaded gave a 5-1 edge, and Hitless didn’t look back. Mason Everett would put an exclamation point on the series when he slugged a grand slam, making a comeback near impossible. Adam takes his second win of the series, and The Scared Hitless secured their first KWL Championship.

In their 3rd campaign, Scared Hitless notched an impressive 19-9 season and knocked off two former KWL champs (Itchers and Friars) on their way to capturing the Mullany Cup. The 6 members of Hitless will be a welcomed group to the list of past KWL champions.

In the words of the Hitless’s Ginger Captain “After 3 years of bloody knees, tossed bats, kicked buckets and blown out arms, Scared Hitless can finally be called CHAMPIONS.”

Congratulations to the new Champs, enjoy the target for next season!

Adam Kuzmin won the Township Series MVP
