Jeremy Martin, aka “Jers,” one of the league’s best all-around players and one of two original members of the PF Flyers, will spend much of his Monday afternoon under the knife.

Jers will have the first rib on his right side removed today to hopefully relieve a life-threatening blood flow blockage. The rib, along with his clavicle, is pinching his subclavian vein and cutting off blood flow. Jers was to undergo surgery starting at 12:30 p.m. today.

When asked to give a pre-surgery comment to the league, Jers said this afternoon via text:

"I just took two Percocets. That is my comment," he said.

Jers will most likely be lost for much of the 2013 season and the PF Flyers will use their reserve roster spot for him. “Jers” was an All-Star pitcher last year and one of the leaders of the three-year-old team. He was instrumental to the team’s 2011 American League championship.

“Wiffle ball aside, this was frightening and devastating news. Jers has remained positive throughout this ordeal and we’re confident he’ll recovery fully and get back to living his active lifestyle,” team captain John Liberty said. “On the field, Jers is an ideal teammate whose competitive nature and pop culture references are unmatched in the league. We wish our brother well. Pffffffffff.”

Jers was unaware of the rare condition until shortly after competing in a disc golf tournament in October.

After playing several rounds, his right arm became swollen and discolored. Jers said he assumed he’d torn a muscle. When the swelling persisted, Jers went to the doctor, where he was told he had blood clotting.

He was put in intensive care after suffering a pulmonary embolism when a clot went to his lung. He spent a week in the hospital and underwent three surgeries. He was also put on blood thinners.

Following today’s surgery, Jers will require several weeks of recovery and rehabilitation. He said he plans to attend games when he can. If you see him around this year, be sure to say hello. Just don’t pat him on the shoulder for a while.

If you’re not friends with Jers on Facebook, you can find him here:
